Carson was obviously nervous. There were deep furrows in the dirt from where he had been incessantly pawing the ground. They had had him cooped up in this stall for hours, with only a short walk after getting off the trailer. He had already thought about escape, but it was no use, the walls were too high. The thing that was the worst was he was the last one, everyone else had been moved to a different ring leaving him all alone. Carson let out another piercing whinny. Finally a reply! Someone else was coming.
As the little mare was brought into the stall beside him a boy, no older than fifteen, hooked a lead rope onto Carson's halter. He was so excited to be out of the stall that he leaped out, dragging the boy behind him. As the boy struggled to keep control of the powerful horse a man, much larger than the boy, yanked down on Carson's halter. "Whoa boy, easy" he said softly, soothingly, "it'll be alright, easy." Carson immediatly settled, walking into the small pen stood calmly as the man stroked his neck, reassuring him. The announcer came onto the loudspeaker with a loud crack, "This here's Carson, who has proven himself in turf racing and steeplechasing. He's a gorgeous 5 year old with a bright future. Do I hear 100 dollars?"
